Medical Tests Required When Travelling to Saudi Arabia

As of my last update in September 2021, the medical tests and requirements for travelers to Saudi Arabia, especially those coming for employment or pilgrimage (Hajj or Umrah), include:

  1. Yellow Fever Vaccination: For travelers coming from or transiting through endemic areas.

  2. Polio Vaccination: For travelers from countries affected by polio. Some travelers might be required to take an oral polio vaccine upon arrival.

  3. Meningitis Vaccination: Mandatory for all pilgrims during the Hajj and Umrah seasons.

  4. COVID-19: Given the global nature of the pandemic, there were various requirements around COVID-19. These include:

    • PCR tests before departure.
    • Quarantine upon arrival (the duration and specifics can change based on global and national situations).
    • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination might be needed, especially for pilgrims.
  5. Medical Examination for Expatriate Workers: Expatriates seeking employment in Saudi Arabia are usually required to undergo a comprehensive medical examination in their home country before being granted a visa. The medical examination typically includes:

    • General medical check
    • Chest X-ray (for tuberculosis)
    • Blood tests (for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, etc.)
    • Urine test
    • Other tests depending on the job category and age
  6. Pregnancy Test for Female Workers: Some categories of female workers might be required to undergo a pregnancy test.

  7. Additional Requirements for Hajj or Umrah Pilgrims:

    • Pilgrims are often given specific guidelines to follow to ensure the safety and health of the massive number of visitors.
    • Besides the vaccinations mentioned, there could be requirements for other health precautions or medical reports.

It’s essential to understand that these requirements might vary depending on the purpose of your travel, your nationality, and the countries you have recently visited. These requirements can also change due to emerging global health concerns or changes in Saudi Arabian health policy.

Always consult with the Saudi Arabian consulate or embassy in your home country or a trusted travel agency familiar with the current requirements for traveling to Saudi Arabia. They will provide the most up-to-date and accurate information on medical tests and other travel prerequisites.
